After an emphatic start to the season with a 6-1 win over Bowdon last weekend, Old Georgians Men's 1XI are back at home for their first fixture of the season at St George's College. The reigning champions will take on Southgate at 18:00 on Saturday, 28th September, in what promises to be an exciting encounter.
Old Georgians are coming into the game full of confidence after a stellar performance away from home. New signings like David Ames and David Condon made strong debuts, while familiar faces like Tom Carson and Sam Ward were clinical in front of goal. Despite some new additions, the team's ability to gel quickly has set a positive tone for the season ahead as they aim to continue their title defence.
This will be the third meeting between OGs and Southgate, with Old Georgians having won both of their previous encounters. Most notably, their last clash at St George's College ended in a dramatic 6-5 victory for the OGs, where they came from 4-5 down in the game's dying minutes. In that match, Tom Carson stole the show, netting five of the six goals, including the late winner that secured the comeback victory.
Tom Carson on his performance last time against Southgate:
I'm really excited for the group to get to work in front of our home crowd. Last week we had a long away trip to Bowdon, and I know the club will look forward to welcoming Southgate this Saturday. After last season's thriller, I am hoping Southgate will be eager to play in another free-flowing and quick match that people will be excited to watch. The crowd will undoubtedly be eager to see our new recruits in action for the first time. I'm happy with another 11-goal thriller, but I'm not sure the coaching staff will want it to be so tight!
Southgate, meanwhile, will be determined to put up a strong fight. Though they've lost a few key players, they remain well-organised and competitive. OGs will need to be at their best to break them down, but the home advantage, combined with their current form, gives them a great platform to continue their winning run.
The stage is set for an intense encounter, and with Old Georgians looking to make a statement in their first home match of the season, fans can expect a thrilling game of hockey.
