Old Georgians Men’s 1XI Dominant in 12-1 Victory Over Richmond

07/10/2024

Old Georgians Men’s 1XI continued their rampant start to the Premier Division season with a resounding 12-1 victory over Richmond at St George’s College on Saturday. The reigning champions delivered a masterclass in attacking hockey, leaving their opposition overwhelmed from the very first whistle.

The game got off to an electric start with Alan Forsyth opening the scoring just one minute into the game. This early goal set the tone for what would be a relentless performance from Old Georgians, who applied pressure on Richmond from all angles. Richmond, celebrating their 150th anniversary this season, were immediately on the back foot and struggled to contain the speed and precision of the Georgian attack.

Tom Carson added to the tally with a penalty corner conversion in the 10th minute, followed quickly by a goal from his brother James Carson just a minute later. Old Georgians had put three goals past the Richmond defence within 11 minutes, showcasing their attacking depth and ability to turn opportunities into goals.

As the game progressed, David Condon got in on the action with a well-taken field goal in the 18th minute, putting OGs 4-0 up. Richmond were unable to stem the tide as Chris Proctor added another goal in the 25th minute, followed by James Carson's second of the game just before the halftime whistle, giving Old Georgians a 6-0 lead going into the break.

The second half saw more of the same, with Old Georgians continuing their attacking dominance. Sam Ward found the back of the net in the 37th minute, further extending the lead to 7-0. Though Richmond managed to pull one back in the 46th minute with a penalty corner goal from Scott Wall, it did little to change the course of the match as Old Georgians remained in complete control.

Alan Forsyth scored his second of the game in the 42nd minute, making it 8-1, before Old Georgians added a flurry of goals in the final 20 minutes. Tom Carson scored another in the 50th minute, followed by a penalty corner conversion by Phillip Roper in the 52nd minute, taking the scoreline to double digits.

Not satisfied with just a hat-trick, Sam Ward sealed his performance by scoring twice more in the 57th and 70th minutes, completing an impressive haul and bringing the final score to 12-1. Ward’s clinical finishing, combined with the contributions of other key players, ensured Old Georgians delivered one of their most dominant performances yet.

The win solidifies Old Georgians’ position at the top of the Premier Division table, extending their unbeaten run and showcasing their credentials as title contenders once again. Richmond, on the other hand, will need to regroup and address their defensive vulnerabilities after a tough day at the office.
