Old Georgians Men Look to Defend Their Super 6’s Title

24/01/2025

Following the Ladies’ 1s securing their National League status for 2025, all eyes now turn to Old Georgians Men’s 1XI as they head to Derby Arena this weekend for the Super 6’s Finals. Having dominated the group stages, Old Georgians are set to take on East Grinstead in the semi-finals. A victory would see them book a place in the final and set up a potential blockbuster clash with Wimbledon, in what could be a repeat of the last two years’ finals.

The Path to the Finals

Old Georgians have been relentless in their pursuit of success throughout the Super 6’s campaign, finishing the group stage in style. A key highlight was their 5-3 triumph over East Grinstead, with goals from Alan Forsyth, James Carson (2), and Tom Carson (2). The performance showcased their attacking brilliance and ability to control games under pressure.

The semi-final provides an opportunity to replicate that success against East Grinstead, who will be seeking revenge. With the likes of James Carson and Tom Carson in fine form, supported by captain Dan Shingles’ leadership, Old Georgians will enter the match with confidence and focus.

A Familiar Rival Awaits?

Should Old Georgians overcome East Grinstead, they are likely to face Wimbledon in the final. Wimbledon, however, must first navigate their own semi-final challenge against a strong Southgate side.

If the final does feature Old Georgians and Wimbledon, it will be a showdown for the ages. The two sides have met in the last two Super 6’s finals, with each team claiming one victory apiece. Wimbledon triumphed in 2023, but Old Georgians bounced back in 2024 to reclaim the title. With both teams boasting top-class players and a history of tightly contested matches, another final between the two would undoubtedly deliver high drama and exceptional hockey.

Building Momentum

For Old Georgians, the Super 6’s Finals represent more than just a chance to retain their indoor title. It’s an opportunity to build momentum heading into the outdoor season’s second phase. Success in Derby would further solidify their reputation as a dominant force in English hockey, both indoors and outdoors.

James and Tom Carson, two of the competition’s standout performers, will again be key to Old Georgians’ hopes. Their combination of clinical finishing and creativity has been central to the team’s success. Meanwhile, Alan Forsyth’s early goals in key matches have consistently given the team the upper hand, and the defensive efforts led by Shingles have been instrumental in seeing off opponents.

What’s Next?

It’s all to play for this weekend at Derby Arena. Fans can look forward to a thrilling semi-final against East Grinstead and the possibility of another iconic final against Wimbledon. Will Old Georgians retain their crown? Will we witness the latest chapter in the Old Georgians-Wimbledon rivalry?

The stage is set, and Old Georgians are ready to rise to the occasion. Let’s back the boys as they look to make history once again.
