Hard-Fought Victory Against Beeston
Old Georgians Men's 1XI faced a challenging double-header this weekend, starting with a physical contest against Beeston on Saturday at St George's College. Known for their toughness and organisation, Beeston pushed OG hard, creating a tense and closely contested match.
Tom Carson opened the scoring early for OG in the 5th minute, followed by a goal from Chris Griffiths in the 17th minute, putting OG 2-0 up. However, Beeston responded with a goal from George Fletcher in the 38th minute, narrowing the gap right before half-time. OG's Phillip Roper quickly restored the two-goal advantage with a 37th-minute strike, but Alan Forsyth followed up just a minute later to make it 3-1.
Beeston fought back hard in the second half, with Henry Croft scoring in the 45th minute, and the game became a nervy affair. Despite the pressure, OG held firm and saw out the 3-2 victory.
Captain James Albery commented after the game: “It was always going to be a tight game against them. They’re well set up, as always, and they came here ready for a battle. We weren’t good enough for large periods, but there were moments where we moved the ball well, which helped us go ahead. Fair play to them, though, they gave it everything, and we just managed to come out on top in the end.”
Ruthless Display at Oxted
Less than 24 hours later, OG travelled to Oxted for a Sunday lunchtime fixture, producing a far more dominant performance. The team quickly took control, with Matthew Brown opening the scoring with a penalty corner in the 8th minute.
Alan Forsyth then added two goals in quick succession (22’ and 28’), and by the 30th minute, James Carson had made it 4-0. Edward Carson scored in the 31st minute, stretching the lead to 5-0. Oxted managed to get on the scoresheet, with Owen Williamson converting a penalty corner and Charlie Axford adding another goal shortly after.
However, OG quickly quashed any hopes of a comeback, with further goals from Thabang Modise, Chris Griffiths, and Phillip Roper pushing the scoreline to 9-2. Modise completed the scoring with his second goal of the match in the 67th minute, capping a fantastic display.
A Successful Weekend for Old Georgians M1
Old Georgians M1 came out of this double-header weekend with six points, scoring 12 goals over two games and demonstrating both resilience and firepower. While the Beeston match highlighted their ability to scrap out a result under pressure, the Oxted performance was a clear demonstration of their attacking depth and ability to control games.
With strong performances from players like Alan Forsyth, Chris Griffiths, and the Carson brothers, OG solidified their position at the top of the Premier Division. As the season continues, they will be looking to maintain this momentum and continue their quest for league success.
