Old Georgians Ladies 1XI Kick Off New Season Against Old Loughtonians

21/09/2024

The 2024/25 season begins later today for Old Georgians Ladies 1XI as they welcome Old Loughtonians to St George's College.

After a strong showing last year, which saw them finish fifth in their debut National League season, Old Georgians will be looking to build on that success and start their campaign with a positive result. The match gets underway at 16:00, and with the home crowd behind them, OG's will be eager to hit the ground running.

Old Georgians enjoyed success in both encounters against Old Loughtonians last season, securing a 3-1 victory away at Luxborough Lane and edging a tight 2-1 win at home. The squad will be hoping to replicate those performances in today's clash, but they know that each new season brings fresh challenges, and no result is guaranteed.

The team enters this season under new leadership, with *Leigh Maasdorp*, the club's Director of Hockey, stepping into the role of Head Coach. Maasdorp brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the game, and she will be supported by none other than former Great Britain international Leah Wilkinson. Wilkinson, who enjoyed a stellar career at Surbiton and Holcombe, brings invaluable international and domestic experience, with over *200 caps* for Wales and Great Britain combined, and will provide a fresh perspective to help OG's push forward this season.

Wilkinson's appointment comes as Nikki Lloyd steps down from her role as Player-Coach, allowing her to focus solely on playing. Lloyd was instrumental in helping the team achieve National League status, and her presence on the field remains a huge asset for the squad. With Maasdorp and Wilkinson now at the helm, the team is set up for a season filled with potential.

Speaking ahead of the game, Maasdorp said,

"We've had a strong pre-season, and I'm excited to see how the group performs. Last year was a great learning curve for the team, but we're determined to push on this season and show what we're capable of."

The Ladies 1XI will use the experience gained from their first National League season and the fresh energy brought by Wilkinson's arrival to mount a serious challenge in the league. Old Loughtonians, always a competitive outfit, will provide a tough test, but Old Georgians will be determined to start their campaign on a high.

As the players take to the field under a new coaching set-up, there's a sense of optimism around what this season could bring. With key players like Nikki Lloyd and captain Gemma Doran continuing to lead on the pitch and the tactical acumen of Maasdorp and Wilkinson off it, this could be a breakthrough season for Old Georgians in the National League.

The action kicks off at 16:00 at St George's College, and the team will be counting on their home support to create the perfect atmosphere for what promises to be an exciting opening fixture.
