Old Georgians Ladies 1XI Hold League Leaders Teddington in Thrilling 2-2 Draw

12/11/2024

Old Georgians Ladies 1XI fought hard to secure a well-deserved 2-2 draw against league leaders Teddington in a tense and fiercely contested match at St George's College. Both teams showed why they are among the top competitors in the Women's Conference East, with the game featuring tactical plays, precise goals, and a thrilling back-and-forth scoreline.

The match started with OGs establishing their defensive organisation, as Teddington initially applied pressure. The visitors had an early goal disallowed for a stick tackle, a decision that appeared to energise the home side. OGs began to settle into the game, finding rhythm and challenging Teddington's control.

The first breakthrough came in the 53rd minute when Rosie Macpherson converted a penalty corner, giving OGs the lead and sparking celebrations on the home sideline. Her well-placed strike showcased her skill and highlighted OGs' ability to capitalise on set-piece opportunities. However, OGs knew the battle was far from over, with Teddington mounting their response.

Just seven minutes later, Teddington equalised through Isabella Robson, who converted a penalty corner of her own in the 60th minute. The goal levelled the score at 1-1 and reignited the competitive tension on the field. But OGs responded quickly, showing resilience and determination as they pushed forward to regain control.

In the 63rd minute, Orna Bools stepped up with a crucial goal to put the OGs back in the lead. Her composed finish added to the OGs' tally, demonstrating their tenacity and willingness to keep pressing despite Teddington's pressure. With only minutes left, it looked like the OGs were set to claim a memorable victory against the league leaders.

However, Teddington proved why they sit atop the league standings. With just three minutes remaining, Mel Ball found the net in open play, equalising the score at 2-2 and leaving OGs just short of a famous win. The final whistle blew with both teams sharing the points after an intense battle.

Despite the draw, OGs can take pride in their performance against a formidable opponent. The result keeps OGs in fifth place in the Women's Conference East, but it's clear they can challenge the best teams in the division. Head Coach Leigh Maasdorp praised the team's resilience, noting how well they matched Teddington throughout the game.

With this hard-fought draw, OGs will look to build on their momentum as they head into the following fixtures. The Ladies 1XI demonstrated both their defensive strength and attacking creativity, sending a clear message that they are a team to watch as the season progresses.
