Ashley Jackson Reflects on Old Georgians’ Success, Indoor Hockey, and the Return of the HIL

29/12/2024

As the calendar turns to 2024, Old Georgians Men’s 1XI find themselves in an enviable position—unbeaten at the top of the league after an incredible first phase of the season. With 11 wins from 11 matches, the reigning champions have set the standard for consistency and excellence. Under the expert guidance of head coach Ashley Jackson, the team has not only achieved dominance but also laid a strong foundation for the challenges ahead.

Speaking about the team’s progress, Jackson is both pleased and measured in his assessment. “We are, of course, happy with the 11 wins from 11 at the Christmas break,” he says, “but there are no prizes at the end of Phase 1. There is a long way to go, and although we’ve had many good minutes of hockey up to this point, we also have plenty of room to tidy some stuff up as we head into Phase 2.” This balanced perspective reflects his determination to keep the team focused on the ultimate goal—finishing the season as champions.

While the team shifts its focus temporarily to indoor hockey, Jackson’s career achievements extend far beyond the domestic game. Having spent five seasons playing in the prestigious Hockey India League (HIL), including a championship-winning campaign with the Ranchi Rays in 2015, Jackson speaks fondly of his time in the league. “It’s the memories I’ll treasure the most—spending time with players from all over the world and travelling around India, playing in front of some incredible crowds,” he shares. With the HIL set to make its much-anticipated return, Jackson sees it as an unparalleled opportunity for players to grow, experience new cultures, and test themselves against the world’s best.

Two Old Georgians players, James Albery and Sam Ward, are set to feature in the HIL, and Jackson believes their participation will benefit both their individual development and the club. “It’s an exciting time for both of them. They’ll face new and different pressures, learn from players and coaches from all over the world, and come back with stories and memories that will help them grow,” he explains. For Jackson, such experiences are invaluable in building well-rounded players who can contribute even more to the team.

Back in England, the team has seamlessly transitioned from outdoor to indoor hockey with the start of the Super 6s season. For Jackson, the shift is a welcome one. “As the dark nights get colder and colder, the boys are pretty much ready to get inside and out of the weather,” he jokes. Yet he also acknowledges the value of indoor hockey as part of the club’s wider ambitions. “Our aim is to try and retain our indoor title as well as push for promotion back to the A Division in Europe. At the very least, it’s an opportunity to stay sharp and engaged over the winter before we head into Phase 2.”

Managing the diverse commitments of the squad, which include domestic, indoor, and international hockey, is no small feat. However, Jackson’s experience at the highest level has equipped him with a people-first approach. “Everyone is different; everyone has something different going on, whether it’s international hockey, family life, work commitments, or some combination of all the above. So everyone requires an individual approach,” he explains. “Ultimately, we want people who want to be around the group and club, drive the highest of playing standards, and foster an enjoyable culture. We need to care for each other and care about what we’re doing.”

With Jackson at the helm, Old Georgians are in capable hands as they embark on the next chapter of their journey. Whether it’s indoor hockey, international tournaments, or the return to the outdoor Premier Division, the club’s ambitions remain sky-high. For now, the focus is on staying sharp and continuing their winning momentum into the new year.

As the team looks ahead to another challenging yet exciting phase, one thing is clear: Old Georgians are not just chasing trophies—they are building a legacy.
